Just about what you would expect - they work with fire sprinklers! However, fire sprinklers can be more complex than many would believe. As a sprinkler service technician, your job will vary based on the age and type of system you are working with. Tasks could include conducting flow tests, replacing or repairing parts, sending sprinkler heads out for testing, conducting internal or external inspections and more.
This job involves a lot of on-site time. You’ll be heading out to customers’ buildings and checking their systems to make sure they’ll work in the case of a fire emergency.
Generally, if you want to become a fire sprinkler serviceman, you’ll start with an apprenticeship program or similar type of job, which combines on-the-job training with educational opportunities. This stage can last 3-5 years, depending on the program.
From there, these techs often specialize in one area, or go on to become a foreman or project manager. Sometimes, they opt to start their own business.
The salary for this position can vary, but generally the average hourly pay is around $26 per hour, or an average of about $76,000 per year.
